The Cairo Geniza is a collection of almost half a million pages of manuscripts that accumulated in the storeroom of the Ben Ezra Synagogue in Cairo from the 11th century onwards. The texts are in various languages, mostly Hebrew, Arabic, and Aramaic, and document almost 1000 years of social and economic life of the Mediterranean region. They include both religious and secular writings, the latter includes shopping lists, marriage contracts, school exercise books and items written by Maimonides.

Join us for an exclusive viewing of this collection and a presentation by expert curators, hosted by Circle Square member and historian, Eleanor Levy.  After the tour, you’re welcome to stay and enjoy the wonderful sights of Cambridge, at your leisure.

There is no charge for members but we request a £15 fee for non-members.

Travel Arrangements

Trains from London Kings Cross, St Pancras and Liverpool St to Cambridge run every 30 minutes. The journey time is approx one hour. Travel arrangements and costs to Cambridge will not be provided by Circle Square however, if possible, we would like to travel together as a group. Once registered, Anne Marie can advise you about group travel arrangements.

Eleanor Levy has degrees both from The Open University and UCL.  She taught History at Regents College and also specialised in taking students on field trips around the capital.  Since retiring she runs adult History groups for her local U3A in Hampstead Garden Suburb and continues her interest in exploring historic sites.
